The International Air Transport Association does not allow crates to be loaded on airplanes since according to their definition, crates are open transport containers. However, crates are allowed on ships.

Wooden Decorative Boxes:

Wooden decorative boxes are valued for their decorative purposes rather than their utility. Decorative wooden boxes are used for promotional or gifting purposes. The most commonly used decorative wooden boxes are women's work boxes. Wooden work boxes are fitted with trays and are often divided into compartments. The different compartments are used to hold needles, thread reels and other sewing items. Wooden decorative boxes in the 17th and 18th centuries had complicated designs on them and were inlaid with metal or precious stones. The makers of the boxes took great pains to make them delicate looking and pleasing to the eye. Other kinds of wooden decorative boxes were snuff boxes. Snuff boxes are used only as show pieces nowadays. However, during the 18th century and till the mid 19th century it was unthinkable for a man of breeding to be seen without a snuff box. Snuff boxes had lids decorated with portraits or miniatures. They were set with diamonds or precious stones. The craftsmen of Kashmir, India make a certain kind of wooden decorative box. Thy are carved all over with leaves and vines and have a secret lock hidden among the carvings. The box can only be opened by unlocking the secret lock.

These wooden decorative boxes make excellent gifts. Wooden carved boxes are unique one-of-a-kind items. They should be handled with great care. The intricate design and carving can get damaged easily if not taken care of properly. Wooden boxes should not be washed and only wiped in case of dust accumulation.

Wooden Jewelry Boxes:

Jewelry boxes are used for storing jewels as well as trinkets. Wooden jewelry boxes are often encased with leather and are satin lined on the inside. Wooden jewelry boxes may be modest sized with five or six trays to hold the various items of jewelry. Or they may be of monumental proportions like the huge jewel cabinets built for Marie Antoinette.

Wooden Wine Boxes:

Wine boxes are required for shipment of wines. Wooden wine boxes are made of smooth and lightweight wood. The boxes are designed to hold one, six or twelve bottles. The boxes have hinged lids or sliding lids that are becoming increasingly popular. Wooden wine boxes designed to hold single boxes usually have sliding lids, whereas boxes designed to hold six or twelve boxes are built with hinged lids. The wooden wine boxes have removable trays with supports provided below. The supports allow the divider to be removed so that the box can be used for other purposes once the wine has been consumed. The boxes are at times fitted with neck holders to prevent the bottles from rolling around once they have been packed.

Wooden Packing Cases:

Wooden packing cases have hinged corners and removable bases and lids. Some wooden boxes are built in such a way that they can be folded flat. During usage, the lids and bases are screwed to the sides to give the case a rigid structure. Wooden packing cases are useful for transporting goods through airplanes. They are most widely used for transporting tea.

Other wooden boxes are available for various purposes. Wooden CD cases, pencil cases, pen cases and other storage boxes are available in plenty. Handmade boxes with intricate carvings are extremely popular. Boxes made of high quality wood like rosewood, teakwood or walnut wood are very expensive. A well varnished box will last through years. Unlike other materials which cannot be repaired once they are broken, wooden boxes can be fixed over and over again.
