Bookshelves

Bookshelves are furnitures used to store books. In earlier times books were written by hand and produced in small quantities. They were kept by the owners in containers. As manuscripts began to be accumulated, they were stored on shelves or in cupboards. The cupboards are the predecessors of the bookcase. The first bookcases were made of oak. Even now it is considered to be the best kind of wood for making bookcases. The oldest bookcases are to be found in the Bodleian Library at Oxford University, England. They are rows upon rows of flat shelves and are a bit stark in appearance. Furniture manufacturers like Chippendale and Sheraton have designed bookshelves glazed with lozenges and encased in fretwork frames. They have great elegance and look very charming.
