Cane Baskets

Cane basket weaving is the process by which unspun vegetable fibers are woven into baskets. The earliest evidence of woven baskets date back by 10,000 to 12,000 years. Baskets rarely survive for a long time since they are made of perishable materials. Basket weaving makes use of stakes, spokes and weavers. The stakes or spokes usually form the bottom of the basket. They form the vertical framework for the basket sides. Round shaped baskets have spokes, other shapes have stakes. The job of the weavers is to fill in the sides of the basket using thin cane strips. The parts of a cane basket is divided into the base, the side walls and the rim. A cane basket may also have a lid, handle or embellishments. In India cane basket weaving is concentrated in the Northeast states of Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur and Assam.
