Coastal Handicrafts of India

Paper Mache Snake gameDimension:

India has a vast coastal line and variegated handicrafts flourish all along these coastal plains. While most of the coastal handicrafts are based on raw materials available at the shores and seas, there are some that are independent of these. Traditional handicrafts are passed on as a legacy from generation to generation, and along with these develop new and unique forms of crafts nurtured by modern sensibility and aesthetics.

Coastal Handicrafts of West Bengal

West Bengal has its shores bordered by the Bay of Bengal. One of the most famous handicrafts of West Bengal is the conch shell art. The conch shell artists are known as the ‘Shankharis' in West Bengal. They practice their hereditary art with an expertise that is honed by ages of experience and skill. Shimmering conch shells are sliced with simple hand tolls and perfectly fashioned to form shell jewelry like bangles, bracelets, pendants and a range of other jewelry items. Along with shell articles is produced mother-of-pearl cutlery such as spoons, forks, knives, small plates, and jewelry.

Coastal Handicrafts of Orissa

The state of Orissa is yet another site of various handicrafts and folk art forms. Along with the golden beaches and famous sculptures, historical sites and temples, Orissa is famous for its colorful appliqué works from Pipili, paintings like the Patachitra and Saura Tribal paintings, and vibrant fabrics.

The stone carvers of Pathurasahi use classical techniques handed down through generations, crafts exquisitely carved stoneware, sculptures and statues from sandstone and soapstone. The brass statues available at Puri are also famous for their finery. The wooden masks and detachable wooden toys are other specialties of the state. The chitrakars (artists) specialize in making patachitras —the renowned cloth folk paintings of Orissa which enshrine and reflect the rich socio-religious history of the region. Appliqued wall hangings, umbrellas, garments, linen, and handbags are a shopper's dream. The sholapith craft is practised at Puri, with the craftsmen turning out decorative hangings, images of the gods, garlands, flowers and a host of other articles. Then there are craftsmen who make papier-mache masks, which are in great demand both because of their visual appeal and workmanship.
