In Japan, a bamboo forest is usually found surrounding a Shinto shrine as a good luck charm. While in Malaysia, when young men go on their first hunting expedition, the foremost advice they receive from elders is that if they are ambushed by a wild tiger or a raging elephant they must hide themselves among the hardy bamboo reeds. The belief is that bamboo plant is strong against the force of an elephant.
