Elegant Rugs in Silk
Silk rugs are more expensive and delicate than rugs made of wool or synthetic fibers. Silk rugs are not 100% silk since the material is rather delicate to be used exclusively to make rugs. Not only is silk not strong enough to be used alone, the cost is also prohibitively high. As a result, most silk rugs are woven with a small percentage of silk added to wool. Silk provide shine and luster to the rugs when woven into them.
Due to their delicate nature, silk rugs should be used in areas where there is minimal foot traffic since they can get damaged easily if people tread on them frequently. Silk rugs can be used in select areas of your home to create an aesthetically pleasing look but they lack any practical use due to their penchant for getting damaged easily. Cleaning these rugs and caring for them so as to make them last, is also extremely difficult. You have to make sure that the silk threads are not damaged while cleaning them.
You should vacuum a silk rug twice a week so as to remove any dust layer that must have formed over it as well as to remove any dirt that is stuck to the fibers. Before vacuuming, flip the rug upside down and beat the underside gently with a stick. This will help in loosening up the dirt caught in the silk fibers, thereby making it easier to remove it during vacuuming. Never beat the top side of the silk rug since it will damage the threads.
If any liquids are spilled on the rug, immediately blot it with a paper towel or cloth until all the liquid is removed. Then, using a small amount of club soda poured onto a clean white cloth, dab the stain, working from the outside towards the inside of the stain. You can also mix equal parts of white vinegar and water and apply this to the stain. Continue blotting with either club soda or white vinegar-water mixture until the stain is removed. Once the stain is completely blotted, use a hair dryer to dry the damp area of the silk rug.
While storing your silk rug, care should be taken not to smash the silk fibers. In order to make sure that the silk fibers are not smashed, roll the rug with its fuzzy side on the outside. Also, to keep dust from accumulating in the fibers, lay a sheet over the rug.
The best way to make sure that the silk rug you have at home will last you a very long time, is to avoid placing it in areas where it will be subjected to too much wear and tear, to make sure that spills do not happen on the rug causing stains to form and to maintain it well by cleaning it and storing it properly.
A silk rug is an elegant, expensive and tasteful style statement, lending a luxurious touch to the rooms in which it is used.
